Summer of STEM: Cup Stacking Challenge for Little Engineers

At DreamSpark Academy, we know that even our youngest students can be great engineers! This week, we look back on our second to last summer STEM activity; a fun and simple Cup Stacking Challenge. With just a few plastic cups, our students explored how to build tall towers, all while learning about balance, gravity, and working together. It was a day full of excitement, smiles, and lots of creative building!

What is the Cup Stacking Challenge?

The Cup Stacking Challenge is an easy and fun activity that lets young children experiment with building and balancing. The goal is simple: use plastic cups to build the tallest tower possible. By stacking the cups in different ways, our young engineers learn how to make their towers strong and stable. It’s a great way for them to practice their motor skills, think creatively, and work together.

What We Used

To get started, each child was given a stack of plastic cups. That’s all they needed to start building!

The Experiment: Step-by-Step

Our little engineers were excited to start building their cup towers. They quickly discovered that stacking cups is not only fun but also a great way to learn about balance and design. Here’s how the challenge went:

1. Exploring and Building

Each child began by exploring different ways to stack their cups. Some started by placing cups directly on top of each other, while others experimented with placing cups upside down or creating pyramid shapes. As they built, they learned which methods made their towers stand tall and which ones caused them to tumble.

2. Testing and Fixing

When a tower fell, there was no giving up! The children tried again, figuring out new ways to balance the cups and make their towers more stable. They quickly learned that wide bases helped keep the towers from falling and that taking their time to carefully stack each cup made a big difference.

3. Working Together

Our young builders also enjoyed working together, sharing ideas, and helping each other. Some teamed up to make even taller towers, learning that two sets of hands can sometimes be better than one. Their teamwork and communication made the activity even more fun and rewarding.

What Happened?

The Cup Stacking Challenge was full of discoveries and learning moments! The children saw that building tall towers takes patience, balance, and sometimes a little creativity. They learned that it’s okay if the tower falls because it’s a chance to try again and do even better. Most importantly, they had a blast experimenting with different ways to stack their cups.

Learning Outcomes

This week’s challenge helped our little engineers learn about important concepts while having fun:

  • Balance: Understanding how to keep their towers from falling by balancing the cups just right.
  • Gravity: Seeing how gravity can make things fall and finding ways to build against it.
  • Teamwork: Learning to work together, share ideas, and help each other with building.

Questions asked before, during, and after the experiment:

  • What do you think will happen if we stack the cups too high? Why?
  • How can we make sure our tower doesn’t fall over easily?
  • What shapes can we use to make our tower stronger?
  • Do you think it’s better to start with a wide base or a narrow base? Why?
  • How tall do you think you can make your tower using all the cups?
  • What do you notice about your tower as it gets taller?
  • How are you making sure your cups are balanced?
  • Why do you think your tower is staying up (or why do you think it’s falling)?
  • What happens if you put a cup upside down? Does it help or make it harder?
  • How can you change your tower to make it taller or stronger?
  • When the Tower Falls
  • Why do you think the tower fell over?
  • What could you do differently next time to make the tower stronger?
  • How did the base of your tower affect its stability?
  • What was the highest point you reached before the tower fell?
  • Can you think of a new way to stack the cups that might work better?
  • What did you learn about building and balancing from this challenge?
  • What was the most challenging part of stacking the cups?
  • How did you solve problems when your tower started to wobble or fall?
  • If you were to do this challenge again, what would you change about your design?

Try It at Home!

The Cup Stacking Challenge is easy and fun to try at home! All you need are some plastic cups. See how tall you can build your tower, or try making different shapes and designs. It’s a fun way to practice balancing and problem-solving!
